SAVEC and Winter Break

Last week, Tyler and I traveled to SAVEC in King Salmon for the welding class. We brought home new welding jackets, gloves, binders full of information, and new automatic welding hoods. It was a great week but it has left my face chapped because of the heat.

We learned about stick welding (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), MIG welding (Gas Metal Arc Welding), Oxy Fuel Cutting, and Plasma Cutting. We were supposed to learn about TIG welding (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) but we didn't have enough time.

With the stick welding, we were able to learn about adjusting the machine to get the best weld and a few different types of electrodes use in the welding process. We also learned about how to adjust the machine for the MIG welding. Everyone got to learn how to set up, turn on, and use an Oxy Fuel cutting torch and the different types of gasses that can be used to cut metal with.

The last two days, we had a competition to see who could get the best cuts and welds. We were judged on a stick weld, a MIG weld, and an oxy fuel plate that we had to cut. The prizes for each weld or cut was a brand new DeWALT angle grinder. Tyler was able to take home one for his Oxy Fuel cut.

While at SAVEC we were able to take a soap stone carving class and drivers ed. Almost everyone took the soap stone carving class.

SAVEC was very fun.

This week, all we have been doing is just crafts and fixing up little odds and ends before the semester ends.

Nancy has been teaching Isabella and me how to crochet. I have started to make a baby blanket and Isabella is going to make a bird. On Friday we are probably just going to watch a movie.

I won't post anything until next year when the semester starts up again. Hope everyone has a good winter break

Totally forgot to post last Friday

Hello all. I apologize for not posting last Friday. Last week wasn't very eventful. We planned a movie night but nobody had shown up so I think we are just going to have to have one after winter break.

Yesterday, Tyler and I were suppose to go to SAVEC in King Salmon for another welding class but we didn't get out yesterday. Hopefully we leave today.

Thats about it really. Last week wasn't very exciting. But everyone can't wait for winter break! I know I can't :D I hope everyone has a good week

This entire week

This week hasn't been too bad. Nothing really exciting happened. Except we have our fish tank set up again!

The elementary painted pictures and put them against the back of the tank to decorate it. Out of all 500 of our eggs, the elementary counted that three of them were dead.

On Sunday, we are having a auction/cake walk. We will be auctioning off food and labor. We are also having a movie night on the seventh of December.

Tyler and I are leaving the ninth to go to SAVEC in King Salmon for another welding class. We will get back the 15th.

The last thing is that Erin and I are going to be filling out the applications for our college class next semester.

Thats all for what happened this week :) I hope everyone has a good weekend

Graduation Preparation!

This week has been fun. In and out of school. Monday night, a lot of people went clam digging. We went down the beach around 7 and got back around 9. Everybody found a good amount of clams. Instead of everyone taking some home, we put them all in a couple totes and let them sit over night to let them clean themselves out a bit.

The next day, the high schoolers and middle schoolers got out of school at 1:30 to start cleaning the clams for the thrown together potluck we had planned. Everyone had their own job. Tyler and Zach were opening the clams and taking the black tips out of them. Anna and Isabella were splitting the clams into half shells. Our teacher, Nancy, and I cleaned the insides of the clams and placed them onto trays. Erin made a flour mixture and then learned how to work our soft serve ice cream machine. Cleaning the clams took a long time and we didn't even clean all of them. After the potluck started, I traded with someone so I could take a break and then I started making waffle cones again. I made an even 15 cones.

Other then that, Erin, Tyler, and I started to plan for our graduation. We looked through a Stumps magazine and looked for decorations. At first we didn't really want to because it seemed like a lot of work but after we started, it became fun. We were having some trouble finding somethings but we still have a bit of time.

This morning we had a fundraiser. It was a brunch. Its going to be at 11 AM. Some of the menu items were eggs benedict, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, and many others. Everyone had fun, the food was good, and we got some donations for our trip.

We also had a LSAC meeting on Monday. Our principal, Mr. Manning came in on Monday and left on Wednesday. He also went clam digging.

This week has been filled with many things and as we get closer to Winter Break we planned a few more small fund raisers. I hope everyone has a good weekend :)

Today was the day.....

So many things went on today. We had a bake sale/ ice cream social fundraiser. It was very fun. I made homemade waffle cones and thought I got pretty good at it. We will calculate out how much we made sometime Monday. We all thought it went really well.

Someone donated a very fancy ice cream machine to us and then recently, someone donated the waffle cone maker so I have a feeling this will be a good fundraiser in the future.

We were also supposed to come back from the volleyball jamboree in Perryville today but because of weather, we were the only school that wasn't able to go :/ we were all disapointed.

Other then that everything has been going well in school. Nothing else has really happened.

Awesomeness!

This week has been good. We got back from Volleyball on Friday. We leave next Wednesday to Perryville for Districts and then we come back Saturday. Hopefully we get back early so we can help with the next fundraiser we have planned which is going to be a Ice cream social/bake sale.

We had a fundraiser on Friday. We had a movie night. We watched the movie The Adventures of Milo and Otis. We have two more fundraisers planned and then two that are just going to be fun.

Other then that, the highschool and elementary both got butterflies a while ago. They are almost all gone but it was very exciting getting to watch them.

Thats all for this week :)

AFN

I was able to go to AFN this last week. I left Sunday to get to Anchorage because it started on Monday.  Because of the weather, only most of the south students made it out but none of the north students. It was only me and four other students and our chaperone. Our north or south chaperone didn't make it to anchorage so Ed Lester chaperoned us.

AFN stands for Alaska Federation of Natives. We stayed for the Elders and Youth Conference but we didn't get to stay for the political part.

On Wednesday we are leaving to Chignik Lake for the south volleyball jamboree. We are going to come home on Friday. They will be broadcasting the games on the internet so I will post the link when I find it out.

Other then that not much has happened. This is it for this blogpost

Photographer! And other things

This week has been good. We had the photographer come in on the 10th. Tyler and I were able to get our senior pictures done.

Our teacher, Mr. B, was picked to go to a conference in Anchorage. I'm actually not sure for what but he seemed excited.

I was picked to go to AFN this year in Anchorage. I am going to be leaving Sunday and will be back Wednesday. I'm really excited to be able to go.

Other then that, we have been working hard to get ready for volleyball season.

Thats all for this week. I probably won't post anything next Friday because its an inservice week :D

More Butterflies!

This week we got two containers of caterpillars in the mail! This time, the high school class has butterflies too. I find it rather exciting because we don't have butterflies in Chignik Lagoon.

Other then that, everything has been going well. Everyone is working hard. Volleyball practice has been going well. Tyler and Zachs mom even bought us new uniforms but we need to stencil on our numbers and we will probably also put names.

Mr. B was also talking about buying and selling Chignik Lagoon Wolverine athletic t-shirt. He showed us acouple designs that he threw together on a designing website. We need to discuss it and redesign the shirt a bit more.

Other then that, we have a new principal because of complications with the airplane service. His name is Mr. Luthi. If the plane situation gets resolved, this may just be temporary.

Thats it for this week.

First post of the new school year.

Hello everyone, I hope your summers went well. Mine was pretty ok. We have been busy getting back into the swing of things. A lot has happened since school started and I haven't had time to post until now.

This year we have a new teacher. His name is Richard Bierer. He was in Levelock for the past two years. Everyone calls him Mr.B.

Other then that, we had an artist come into our school. He was a professional photographer. His name was Harry Walker. He came and had everyone make an alphabet book of pictures and words from around Chignik. I was gone for two weeks so I wasn't able to be here while he was at our school.

Last weekend, from the 21 to the 23, Mr.B and I traveled to a town called Naknek for the Cross Country meet. It was also the regional meet for some other schools. There was a lot of runners there. We left Friday afternoon. Friday night we had a dance because all of the schools except the ones from LPSD were leaving Saturday evening. The girls race started at 10 AM on Saturday. The boys started at 10:45 AM.

Tyler was able to go to another SAVEC program earlier this month. It was small engines and outboard repair. I was accepted to go but was not able to because I was gone.

Official volleyball practice starts today so we will probably start that. Mr.B is our coach this year. The south jamboree will be at Chignik Lake.

Last year I was elected to be on the LPSD Student Government. We had a teleconference before the Cross Country meet and I was voted to be the Parliamentarian. I will write all the positions and names of people once I make sure I'm getting the spelling and positions right.

I think that is about it for this post and school year so far. Everything has been going well. Our school will probably have a student government meeting soon and we will possibly start planning out some fund raisers.

I know I haven't posted in awhile

But that's because we have all been very busy with the artists coming into our school. In the last week of April, we had Diane Selanoff come to our school and teach us more about our culture. We learned twelve native songs and dances. She also taught us how to skin sew sea otter pouches. When she first came, she asked us our favorite animal and she told us what is was in Alutiiq. The day before she left, we had a performance. We invited the community members. We performed our twelve dances and set out our carvings and pouches.

During the last two weeks, we had Allison Warden come into our school. She showed the older students how to use iMovie and they made their own environmental movies. She produced and directed a play with the younger students and after their play, they did four Alutiiq dances. We presented our movies and the little kids had their play before she left. Allison did her own show called "Ode to the Polar Bear".

We put the movies on the newly made school Youtube channel. Another student and I are going to edit the footage of the play and also put that on Youtube. You can find our schools channel here.

Next week is our last week of school. Everyone worked hard and had a great school year :)

Next week we are going to have village clean up, ball race fundraiser(like the duck race but with balls), and our school/community picnic.

This will be my last post :) I hope everyone has a great summer and I will see you guys in the fall.

School this week

Everyone is hurrying, trying to finish up school work and get everything done in time. I know I said I would post pictures this week but our server is being funny. I will hopefully get them some other time.

Later today, we are going to have sort of a student government meeting. We are going to discuss our school trip and fundraisers.

In the upcoming weeks, we will have some artists come to our school. I am not sure when but I will keep everyone updated with it.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. Its almost summer! :D

AA Meet/Prom

Amanda, Tyler, Zach, Frankie, and I got back from the AA Meet on Friday. All of us had a spectacular time. The AA meet was focused on Technology.

The first day we got there, on Monday, we had the Science Fair and started the NYO events. There was 17 science projects from the entire district. There was a wide variety of different science projects. There was a panel of judges that went to every science project and for two minutes, the students had to explain to them what their science project was about. We placed fourth. Our science fair project was about how we could use a microwave to measure the speed of light.

That night, we started the NYO events. We watched events such as the Two Foot High Kick, One Foot High Kick, Alaskan High Kick, One Arm Reach, and a few more. The events we couldn't complete that night, were completed the next night. I placed first in the girls Wrist Carry. I made it 115 feet, eight inches. I didn't qualify for state but I still made it pretty far. I was a little disappointed in myself but it gave me more incentive for next year. Frankie placed third in the Eskimo Stick pull.

The next day, Tuesday, we started our classes. We were split up into groups and there were different classes we had to take. Some of the classes were iPhoto, iMovie, Archery, Public Speaking, Garage Band, and many others. That night we did NYO events such as the Indian Stick Pull, Seal Hop, Wrist Carry, and a couple more. We also had the middle school talent show.

On Wednesday, we had even more class rotations and then later in the day, we had the middle school dance. We also had the winners of the public speaking class speak in front of all the students.  I got to help with the middle school dance because I am an iLeader. The middle school dance was lots of fun. We had fast songs and some slow songs.

Thursday morning, the middle school left. We also had the speeches for the people that wanted to be on the Lake and Peninsula District Student Government (LPDSG). Earlier in the week we had nominations for Prom Court and then the LPDSG, I was able to get one of my friends to nominate me for student government and prom queen. After that we had the Highschool talent show. After that was  That day, during lunch, the current student government held the voting for both prom court and LPDSG. After that we had a suicide prevention presentation. From 2PM-5PM, students had a choice of going to a few different classes. These classes were taking the DMV Written test, Science Fun, Ice Fishing, Air Rifles, and the National Park Society (NPS).

Student Government and the Student Leaders had to set up for prom in that time. After that, everyone had an hour to get ready. Prom started at 6PM and we had dinner from 6PM-7PM. After that we went through the National Honors Society ceremony. Once that was finished, we started the music and the dance. Around 10PM, we had the winners of Prom Court. The dance continued until midnight, then everyone cleaned up and then everyone went to bed.

The next day, Friday, everyone packed up and left. The entire week, everyone had a blast. I will post pictures on Wednesday.

Testing Week

This week, everyone tested, starting Tuesday. Some people call it state testing, other people call it SBAs. Well I got to stay home for three days because I had already pasted my HSQUE. The other students had to test on reading, writing, math, and a few grades had to test on science.

Next Monday, Tyler, Zach, Frankie, and I are traveling for the AA Meet/Prom. This year it will be focused on Technology. This years prom theme is going to be "Frosted Fairy Tale" or the color blue and white. Prom will be Thursday night and we come home Friday.

All of the fish we had in our fish tank, died. My teacher thinks that theres only one of the schools in the district that has fish anymore but she's not sure. We aren't sure why they died but now we just have to clean out the fish tank.

Thats it for this week, I probably won't post next week because we come home on Friday.

I'm home

I got back from Phase 2 on Wednesday. I had lots of fun. There was 11 kids there, a few from our district and a few from the Chugach district. Every night we had to rate how our group did for the day with things such as putting forth our best effort, staying on task, and lots of other things. It was called the sliding scale. We had to get a seven or better to be able to go out and have a leisure. A few things we went and did were ice skating, neon bowling, swimming,  staying in and watching a movie, and a few other things. One night we didn't get to go out so we made up a game to play. It was still lots of fun.

We learned interviewing skills, went on job shadows, and worked out every morning. I also got to tour the UAA campus with a few other kids. We also did a lot of career researching. I thought going to the Phase was really helpful.

Other then that, next week is state testing and thankfully, I get to stay home :D isn't that awesome? I think it is!

The week after that is the talent show. We have been working super hard on our science project but we haven't come with anything for the talent show. I think we will be fine. For our public speaking that we always have to do, I get to read one of the papers I wrote. Its about video games not causing violence :)

Thats all for now, until next week!

Sorry about not posting on Friday

We were working on our science fair project for the AA Meet this year. This year, Zach, Frankie, Tyler, and I are going.

We are measuring the speed of light using a microwave. We take things such as hot dogs or anything else that can either explode or melt and microwave it. We watch for melting or bubbles or cracks, depending on what we use. We have already try marshmallows, hot dogs, twizzlers, and some chocolate chips. Before we began, Alex made us look up and explained the speed of light and the electromagnetic spectrum to us. The AA Meet/Prom will be from the 9th of April to the 13th.

Today I am leaving for a thing called Phase 2. The "Phases" are part of the "School to Life" program. Its a program that allows students to work on Employability standards while also learning to be more independent. We also get to job shadow some people with jobs we might want. I think I'll have lots of fun. I'll try to take some pictures but I never really think about it.

Thats it for now, I'll be gone for about two weeks so for the next two Fridays, there won't be anything that is posted :)

Spring Break

Last week was Spring Break. The week before that was the Career and Technical Training sessions. This week has just been a normal week.

Tyler, Erin, Frankie, and I all went to the training sessions. Erin took Word Processing and Excel while Tyler, Frankie, and I took welding. Erin learned more about the inner workings of Word and Powerpoint. Frankie, Tyler, and I we learned about safety in the shop, and we also learned how to use a few different tools. We had other classes such as Water Safety, First Aid and CPR, and Photography. There were some other kids that were there from LPSD and some kids from Bristol Bay.

We learned a lot in our welding class. We learned how to use and band saw, a grinder, and two different types of welders. We learned how to stick weld and how to mig weld. We also completed a 10 hour OSHA safety course.

They are going to offer some more classes next year and I hope I can get accepted to go again.

Other then that, we won't have another school event until prom. Although I am going to Phase Two in a few weeks. I will keep you updated on things happening in our school, have a great weekend!

Last week, me and Erin went to the Alaska Close Up thats in Juneau. We met some new people and even our Senator, Representative, and the Lt. Governor. We also met some students from a few places over the state. I had a great time and I hope to go back next year as an intern.

This Saturday, Erin, me, Tyler, and Frankie are going to a Career and Technical training in King Salmon. We are going to be taking some classes such as Water Safety, Digital Photography and Welding. I think it will be really fun and hopefully the welding classes will come in handy. I think they will :)

Well thats it for this week, I'm gone all next week and the week after that is spring break so I am going to be in Anchorage. I hope you guys have a good week :)

First Friday of the new school year

Ok, I know I'm late with posting this but its hard to get back in the habit of posting a new thing every Friday after not doing it for so long.

So yesterday we had Saturday school. It was ok, we worked on our boat and had pizza and the community voted on sweat shirts and where we would go to for our school trip. We are going to Washington D.C. Everyone finally got settled into school again.

Our fish have been doing good, we have had quite a few that have died but that is normal.

Well nothing interesting has been happening so that is it for this week. Bye
