Volleyball

Last week we went to the Volleyball Jamboree in Port Heiden. We played a lot of games and did some other activities. We did a service project, where we went out and picked up trash. Port Heiden is known to have glass balls wash up on their beaches all the time. I never found one.

The glass balls are what the Japanese used to keep their nets afloat. They wash up on beaches and people find them.

I got to help with teaching a lesson to the K-5th graders at Port Heiden because I am a part of iLead. We taught them about kindness and read them the book The Giving Tree by Shel Silerstein. After the book we did a small coloring activity, where they colored a giving tree and put an apple on it that had a small act of kindness. We then told them that every time their teacher saw them being kind, they would get an apple on their tree.

We also did a session with the high school students about Red Ribbon Week. We talked about the myths and facts about tobacco, and then we did a couple of activities with them. One activity was we had them close their eyes, and we poured popcorn kernels into a metal bowl, so they could hear how many went in. Each popcorn kernel represented someone who died. One amount was how many people died from car crashes, another was how many people died from alcohol, and the last was how many people died from tobacco use. The next activity was we had everyone run in place and sing happy birthday twice. After that we had everyone breath through coffee stirring straws.

After that, everyone went and picked up trash. We did play a lot of games. Chignik Lake A team won first place and we got second place. Port Heiden White team got third.

We also did some NYO. The Eskimo Stick pull, One Foot High Kick, and the Alaskan
High Kick. We also got out the stick for the Wrist Carry and did a couple of runs of that.

That was about it for our Jamboree, November 14th through the 16th is the District Tourney and that is up in Newhalen.

Rubber Ducky Race

Last Saturday we had our first official fund raiser. It was a Rubber Ducky Race at Parkers Creek. We made a lot of money and we had lots of fun. People bought their duck and then they were able to eat at the picnic. We had hot dogs, marshmallows and soda that you could buy. At 2:30, we dumped the ducks into the creek and watched them race down. We are hoping to be able to do it again after a big storm or when the snow off the mountains starts to melt. We had Erin take pictures of the event.

Next week we will be having in-service. All the teachers will go to a Bristol Bay school to talk about different methods of education. We will have school Monday and a half day Tuesday. We have the rest of the week off after that.

Volleyball and Student Government

This week, after I got back from Dillingham, we had our Student Government elections. I was voted President; Zack McCormick is Vice President; Tyler McCormick is Treasurer, and Erin Pedersen and Anna Jones are Secretary.

We plan on having a meeting this afternoon and a fundraiser tomorrow. The fundraiser will be a Rubber Ducky Race. People will be buying their ducks and we will race them down Packers Creek tomorrow at 2:30. We will also be having a picnic after the race. The winner gets $50.

We started Volleyball practice yesterday and I think it went pretty ok. The first Jamboree will be in Port Heiden for the South schools and in Levelock for the North schools. Both Jamborees will be the 26th of October through the 28th. Then all the schools come together at the District Tourney, which will be at Newhalen this year from the 17th through the 19th.

That is all for this week. Maybe next will be more exciting. Hopefully :D
