Testing

This week our principal visited. Pat Manning, he is the principal of Chignik Lagoon, Port Heiden, and Pilot Point. We had the monthly LSAC. Which is a meeting in which members of the community, teachers, and our principal meet and discuss different things about our school.
Lately we have been reading the book To Kill a Mocking Bird. I think it is a very good book. We are using it to better understand the Civil Rights Movement that we are studying for social studies.
We are also taking our practice SBAs. There is reading, writing, math, and only some grades take the science test. Next week will be a review and then the week after that will be the actual state testing. Testing will take place all day.

Archeologists

This week, some archaeologists came to our school and talked to us about different artifacts and what an archaeologist is. They showed us some artifacts that they found in the Aniakchak National Preserve. They told us the importance of writing down where and when you found artifacts. Because then archaeologists could try and figure out why it was there and what it could have been used for. We also learned about having to think about everything an artifact could be used for.

The archeologist's also did a presentation for the community of Chignik Lagoon. They were talking about coming back and doing an archeological dig and including the students.

Student Work

These are some poems from the high school students from our school. Since we don’t have many students, I’m going to post two poems from me.
Ode to the Fire Hydrantby Justin Tamez
The fire hydrant
Is just sitting there,
So majestic
And uncaring.
It’s as though
A dog could pee
On it and
It wouldn’t even budge
To make death threats.
I know I
Would try.

So here’s to
Fire hydrants everywhere,
Keep on Keeping on.

Ode to My Books
By Bailey Anderson
Patiently they wait.
They wait for the day.
The day they are read.

They collect dust.
Day after day.
Sitting on a shelf.

Yet they grow no resentment.
Sitting on a shelf, day after day.
They wait for you.

They feel no joy when they are read.
No sadness when they are not.
No empathy when one is dropped.

On a shelf, all day.
Sitting, waiting.
For you.

Bacon
By Tyler McCormick
Beautiful brown bacon crisps on the pan
Like an
Albino on the beach on a hot sunny day

The Mirror
By Bailey Anderson
I look into the mirror.
I see the face of a girl.
A girl that wants to be a tomboy.

I see sweat pants.
I see tee shirts.
I see Xtra Tufs and a black beanie.

The comments on how I act.
The questions of why.
“Why don’t you want to look nice?”

I see the trust issues.
I see the thoughts.
I see the soul.

I look into a mirror.
And I see me.

Spring Break in AK

“Spring Break”, or as I like to call it, just a break is here for a week. It started Friday the 26th. We go back to  school Monday.
This Monday, the 28th, we represented our district in the state Battle of the Books.  We are given a number of books to read and then we battle against other schools by answering questions about the books we read. We have to also memorize the authors. We won against the schools in our district so we got to compete in state. We didn’t make it past the first round but I feel like we did really well. We had a pretty good score. Our team was called the Epic Wolverines!
